Author Robert F. Sumrall draws upon an extensive
knowledge of naval architecture and marine engineering garnered from early
employment at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., a naval architectural
firm, and two marine engine manufacturers. He studied mechanical engineering
at Chicago Technical College, Chicago, Illinois, naval architecture at
the University of Virginia, Newport News; and museum studies at George
Washington University, Washington, D.C.
In 2006, Sumrall retired as the Assistant Director and Curator of Ship Models
at the U.S. Naval Academy Museum after thirty-six years. He is a professional
model builder widely known for his sailing and steel-navy ship models. A retired
chief petty officer, he served more than forty years in the U.S. Navy and Naval
Reserve retiring from active duty aboard the USS Iowa (BB-61) in 1990.
Sumrall is the author of Iowa-Class Battleships and Sumner-Gearing-Class
Destroyers published by the Naval Institute Press and has written and illustrated a number
of articles for the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings and other naval publications.
He has also authored a number ship’s data books and articles that have
appeared in a variety of publications.
